Wine Info

“A great wine education class. I was amazed by the instructor's wealth of knowledge, the great wines to taste and talk about, and the small, intimate class size. A fun way to learn a lot about wine.”

Recommended Nevada City Restaurants

1. New Moon ~

Excellent fine dining experience. Sophisticated food offerings, fresh and seasonal. Well-prepared menu changes regularly. Best wine list for fifty miles in any direction (hell, four hundred miles in three directions). Service is friendly and knowledgeable; it could be more attentive, but that would make prices untenable for a foothills location. You can feel confident in wine suggestions from Buzz, the front of the house. Medium pricey, but relatively good value. One block from Veterans Memorial Bldg.

2. Citronee ~

Probably the most talented chef in the area. Always several wonderfully creative, thoroughly delectable items on the menu. Wine list is inventive, unusual, and well-chosen, if not particularly extensive. Nice wine bar in front. Ambiance in the restaurant proper is pretty engaging. Medium pricey, and deserves to be. Two blocks from Veterans Memorial Bldg.

3. Friar Tuck ~

Modestly priced. Good live entertainment in the bar. Well-selected, compact local wine list with some very fine choices. Specialty is fondue, and there are many avenues to explore. A fun place, competently executed. Easy conversation in little nooks and booths. Great with a group. Three blocks from Veterans Memorial Bldg.

4. The Willo ~

A quintessential foothills experience. Reservations strongly suggested because locals come here all the time. Large indoor grill. Big hunk of red meat for around $20 with a baked potato and a wedge of iceberg lettuce. Glasses of mediocre red wine for $3.50. Many patrons in cowboy hats. The grill mistress comes to your table to interview you about how you want your piece of meat cooked. Then does it exactly as you say. It’s impressive. Reminds me of Buenos Aires. Inexpensive. Filling. On Hwy 49 exiting Nevada City to the north, maybe three miles out of town. Leave your sidearm in the car.
